Avian de Keizer Mendoza (he/him)

Born and raised in western Washington, Avian is an interdisciplinary visual artist whose work centers on techniques in experimental photographic processes. He uses many mediums, including but not limited to collage, 16mm, 35mm, medium and large format film photography, Super 8 and 16mm moving image, digital photography, cyanotypes, photograms, phytography, direct animation, and watergrams.

He has been studying media arts since 2017 and delved into everything from video news production to video essays on popular culture. While Avian studied film production for around 5 years, pivoting towards visual art has allowed him to be less afraid of expressing his identity and diving into themes related to that identity. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2025 from The Evergreen State College.

His current artistic research dives into memory, repair, identity, anonymity, gender, and environment. He is particularly interested in abstract direct animation as a way to express various experiences of identity to an audience. He believes the participatory and sensory elements of experimental film lend themselves to shared experiences.
